Yamaha PSR-E463 61 key electric keyboard review

Did you know that Yamaha have been manufacturing musical instruments since the late 19th century? You would think that in all this time they would know how to make an excellent keyboard – and they certainly do! I always enjoy testing and reviewing Yamaha keyboards because I know I am not going to be disappointed. Let’s get started with looking at how the Yamaha PSR-E463 electric keyboard sounds!

The Yamaha PSR-E463 electric keyboard has two 12cm bass reflect speakers. These are surprisingly very powerful speakers which provide a fantastic sound. They are very crisp and clear, and for a 61 key portable electric keyboard offer a huge amount of volume and clarity of sound. Naturally, some owners of these types of keyboards choose to amplify the sound for an even better experience. Or, they may have to amplify the sound through external speakers for a gig or performance. But for most people who are buying this keyboard to have and enjoy in the home, then the speakers are just amazing.

How amazing does this keyboard sound?

Touch and feel

Keyboards are very different from pianos as they don’t often come with any kind of weighted action. The keys on the Yamaha PSR-E463 electric keyboard are no exception, but that’s a good thing. A keyboard is designed to be played with ease and to overall have a lot of fun. With so many in-built sounds, backing tracks, accompaniments, rhythms and so on – you want to be able to glide over the keys. So I was very happy with how this keyboard felt to play, with the added bonus of it having touch sensitive keys.

If you are new to the keyboard world, touch sensitive keys offer the ability to press the keys as hard or as soft as you like. The keys will then respond with the correct volume. This, for me, is a very important feature and not one you always see on an electric keyboard.

I don’t very often say this, but there are just too many features on the Yamaha PSR-E463 electric keyboard to cover in this review. I’d probably need to write a dissertation to go through them all! So instead, I will talk about some of the most important and popular features that most keyboard owners go for.

Let’s start with the fundamentals. There are 758 instrument voices, 235 accompaniment styles, 35 grooves and five samples. That is a lot of noise to sample through and enjoy! To have as many as 758 individual instruments at the touch of a button is immense. You could own this keyboard for 20 years and likely never play all of them. But it isn’t just the amount of instruments that makes the Yamaha PSR-E463 electric keyboard special.

With 235 accompaniment styles you can literally play and emulate any song. So whether you like to play pop, rock, blues, swing, jazz, rhumba, tango – the Yamaha PSR-E463 electric keyboard has got you covered. What I love most about this keyboard though is the amount of dance styles on offer. This is where you can have the most fun in my opinion!

One of my favourite features on this keyboard are the two live control knobs. These control knobs allow you to adjust the sound of the music whilst you play. So you can distort the backing style if you like and create a tunnel affect to the sound. I must admit, when I was tinkering around with these controls I did feel a bit like a DJ! Sad, but true. It’s the extra little features like this that just make playing this keyboard so much fun.

Unique features

I couldn’t write this review without mentioning the awesome sampling feature. I didn’t get to test this out myself, but I’ve seen a few YouTube videos and it looks amazing. So you can use your mobile phone and sample any sounds you like and play them back on your keyboard. This could be your own voice or a sample from any sound you like. You can also record and play black your performances from a USB flash drive. This makes it so much easier than having to connect wires to and from your PC or laptop.

The Yamaha PSR-E463 electric keyboard also looks great. It’s stylish, modern, and very easy to use. If you’re a complete beginner and you’re looking to start learning with the PSR-E463, then don’t be nervous about all the controls. They are very intuitive, and it only takes a few minutes to establish how everything works. And in all fairness, that’s where most of the fun lies with this amazing keyboard. Experimenting, sampling, recording, and essentially just having a huge amount of fun finding out what you can produce and compose.

Price and summary

At the time of writing this review the price is around £260. The value that the Yamaha PSR-E463 electric keyboard offers is just incredible. £260 would be considered at the low to mid-range of the market, but I think the price doesn’t matter with this keyboard. It’s absolutely perfect for a beginner, intermediate and even advanced player. Although an advanced player would typically spend more on a keyboard, I can confess to having a huge amount of fun with this.

So the price is fantastic, the keyboard is fantastic – what more do you need?
